Patients who are missing one or more teeth may be good candidates for dental implants and implant restoration. Over time, a missing tooth can lead to a range of oral health issues, including the migration of healthy teeth, impaction of healthy teeth, an increased risk of developing gum disease, increased risk of developing cavities, and eventually jawbone deterioration and additional tooth loss. Missing teeth can also hamper your ability to bite, chew, and maintain proper oral hygiene habits. In addition to these increased risks, patients with missing teeth often feel self-conscious about the appearance of their smile.
There are a range of dental treatment options available for patients with missing teeth, including dental bridges, crowns, dentures, and dental implants and implant restorations. Which treatment option is right for you will be determined by several factors, such as the number of teeth that are missing and the overall state of the teeth surrounding the missing tooth. Dental implants and implant restorations are essentially artificial tooth roots that are made of titanium and placed in your jawbone. The reason these roots are made of titanium is that over time, the bone will naturally adhere to this metal through a process called osseointegration. Once the post is in place, an abutment is attached, which will act as the connecting piece for the new replacement crown, although it will take between 3-6 months for osseointegration to occur.

The Dental Implant and Implant Restoration Process
The dental implant and implant restoration process will begin with an examination of the damaged or decayed tooth or teeth that need to be extracted (if necessary), or an evaluation of the socket and surrounding teeth for a tooth that has already been lost. Once this examination is complete, an X-ray will be taken to ensure that there is an adequate amount of jawbone present to properly support an implant. If there is not an adequate amount of jawbone, a dental bone graft will need to be performed.
If there is enough jawbone present to adequately support an implant, the procedure will begin with administration of a local anesthetic and, if necessary, dental sedation. Once you are properly numbed, a small incision is made in your gums to expose the bone. Next, the titanium implant or implants are placed into your jawbone, and a healing cap is placed over it. After the bone and implants have fused, this cap will be removed, and the abutment and crown will be placed. After evaluating the fit and appearance of the dental implant, the restoration process will be complete.
Aftercare Following Dental Implants
Following the placement of your dental implants, you will need to follow a soft food diet to avoid putting pressure on your teeth and jawbone, slowly reintroducing harder foods over time. Patients who have a dental implant placed due to a sports injury should also consider investing in a mouth guard to avoid similar issues in the future.
Once you have fully healed, it will not be necessary to continue any post-procedural modified self-care, although it is important to consistently follow good oral hygiene practices. In addition to brushing and flossing twice daily (at a minimum), be mindful of the types of food and beverages you consume, and avoid foods or substances that can negatively impact your oral health (chewing tobacco, staining foods, sugary drinks). It is equally important to schedule regular dental cleanings every six months, or more frequently, depending upon your unique oral health needs. If you follow these general guidelines, you will maximize the longevity of your dental implants and enjoy a healthy smile for many years to come!
