Teeth Whitening For Brilliant Smiles

One of the most common concerns we hear from our patients is a lack of self-confidence in their smile. This lack of self-confidence can be caused by a variety of factors, including teeth that are damaged or missing, imbalance between the ratio of their gums and teeth, or teeth that are crooked, but in most cases, patients feel self-conscious about their smile because their teeth are stained or discolored. Fortunately, there are several teeth whitening procedures and treatments available that can make a significant impact on the whiteness of your teeth.

Before pursuing teeth whitening treatment plans, it is important to first identify what is causing your teeth to become discolored and treat this underlying health condition prior to the teeth whitening process. At Kingwood Family Cosmetic Dentistry, we offer a full scope of cosmetic dentistry procedures, ranging from veneers and teeth whitening to bridges, crowns, and dental implants. To ensure that you have a clear understanding of what is involved in the teeth whitening process and determine if teeth whitening is right for you, please refer to the information provided below. If you have additional questions or would like to schedule an appointment, contact us today at 281-359-9100, or visit our office at 1542 Green Oak Pl, Kingwood, TX 77339.

What Teeth Change Color

Teeth can become stained or discolored for a variety of reasons, the most common being:

  • Food and Drink: Red wine, tea, and coffee all contain chromogens, which attach to the enamel of your teeth and cause them to stain.
  • Age: As we age, our enamel thins, resulting in the yellowish dentin becoming more visible.
  • Tobacco: Tobacco contains tar and nicotine, which cause your teeth to yellow.
  • Medications: Certain antihistamines, high blood pressure medications, and antipsychotics can cause teeth to darken.
  • Trauma: After experiencing facial trauma, your tooth will produce more dentin, causing the appearance of your teeth to darken.

Teeth Whitening Treatment Options

The most common teeth whitening treatment options include:

  • In-Office Bleaching: To achieve optimal teeth whitening results in a safe environment, in-office bleaching is your best option and will provide you with the results you are looking for. After applying a rubber shield or protective gel to your gums, we will apply a high concentrate bleach to your teeth, which will significantly whiten your teeth.
  • Dentist Guided At-Home Bleaching: A popular option for patients intending to make teeth whitening a regular process is at-home bleaching that is guided and overseen by your dentist. This process involves a custom-made tray being designed in our office that can be used at home for your teeth whitening treatment. In addition to providing a custom tray, we will also provide instructions for applying bleaching in an appropriate, effective, and safe manner.
  • Over-the-Counter Bleaching: There are several different teeth whitening options available in stores or online, including kits, strips, and/or toothpastes that are designed to whiten your teeth. Although these products can make some improvements in the whiteness of your teeth, the bleach concentration is significantly lower than what can be administered in our office.
  • Stain Removal Toothpastes: If you are considering using a stain removing toothpaste to help whiten your teeth, check to make sure that the product you are using has the ADA Seal of Acceptance for stain removal.

Teeth Whitening Aftercare

Although teeth can become stained for a variety of reasons, including genetic predisposition or due to certain medications, oftentimes it is due to the patient not following good oral hygiene habits. To continue enjoying good oral health and reduce the need for teeth whitening procedures in the future, it is important to continue brushing and flossing twice daily (at a minimum), be mindful of the types of food and beverages you consume, and avoid foods or substances that can negatively impact your oral health (chewing tobacco, staining foods, sugary drinks) It is equally important to schedule regular dental exams every six months, or more frequently, depending upon your unique oral health needs. If you follow these general guidelines, you will enjoy a healthy, attractive smile for many years to come!

Whitening Cost & Insurance Coverage

The cost of teeth whitening will depend upon what type of teeth whitening you have done and what insurance coverage from your dental plan can be applied. It is important to be aware that teeth whitening is not always covered by insurance plans, as it is a cosmetic procedure.

It is also important to be aware that you are fully responsible for all fees and payment is due at the time of service, regardless of your insurance coverage. Monthly payment plans can be arranged, but this will need to be established prior to the procedure being performed. Although we will not have a contractual arrangement with your provider, our staff is happy to assist with processing your insurance claim to ensure that you maximize your benefits and receive the high-quality care you need and deserve. For your convenience, we accept Mastercard, Visa and Discover.
