Full & Partial Dentures for Missing Teeth

Missing teeth can lead to several oral health concerns over time. Nearby teeth may shift into the open space left behind, the risk of cavities and gum disease may increase, and the jawbone can begin to deteriorate. Missing teeth may also make it more difficult to bite, chew, maintain proper oral hygiene, and feel confident in your smile.

Several treatment options are available for replacing missing teeth, including dental implants, bridges, and dentures. The best option for you will depend on how many teeth are missing and the condition of the surrounding teeth, gums, and jawbone.

Patients who are missing several or all of their teeth may be candidates for dentures. These removable appliances provide an effective and affordable way to restore the appearance and function of the smile.

Along with improving the aesthetic appearance of your smile, dentures also provide important functional purposes that will enhance your ability to chew and prevent additional health issues from developing, such as tooth or jawbone loss. In order to prevent these issues from developing and maximize the benefits of your dentures, it is critical that you wear them every day and follow proper maintenance. The two most common categories of denture types are full and partial. As the names indicate, full dentures are suggested for patients missing all their teeth, whereas partial dentures are used when at least one tooth is still present in either the lower or upper jaw.

To ensure that you have a clear understanding of what is involved in the process of getting dentures and/or determine if dentures are right for you, please refer to the information provided below. What to Expect for the Denture Process

Prior to having dentures placed, your dentist will need to perform an initial evaluation to determine if you are an ideal candidate for dentures, and if so, what type of denture is best fit for your unique needs.

Once this has been determined, the denture process will typically involve the following steps:

  • An impression of your teeth and gums is made to ensure the dentures fit comfortably and securely.
  • If necessary, teeth will be extracted and given time to heal prior to the impression being made
  • Your bite is measured using wax rims
  • Customized teeth designed to match the shape, size, and shade of your preferred aesthetic appearance is designed in a laboratory
  • A follow-up appointment is scheduled to test the fit of a mock-up denture set and allow you an opportunity to practice wearing them
  • If you and the dentist are happy with the look and feel of the mock-up, the laboratory will design the final set of dentures
  • At your final appointment, you will be fitted one last time, and any additional adjustments required will be made
  • Regular check-up appointments are scheduled to ensure the fit is correct, with adjustments being made as necessary

It is common for patients to experience some discomfort with their dentures for the first few weeks, including minor soreness or irritation. It is also common to have an increase in saliva during this time. These issues will generally go away over time, but if they persist, contact our office, as this may indicate that an infection has developed. If the dentures feel too tight or too loose, schedule an appointment to have them adjusted.

Proper Denture Care

To ensure that you avoid developing denture-related issues, it is important to follow these guidelines:

  • Remove dentures after eating and rinse them with water
  • Be careful not to damage the dentures when removing them
  • After removal, clean your teeth, palate, tongue, and cheeks using a soft-bristled toothbrush
  • Brush dentures daily
  • Soak dentures at night
  • Always rinse dentures before putting them back in your mouth

In addition to following these guidelines, it is equally important that you continue scheduling regular dental exams. Doing so will ensure that we can provide professional cleanings, monitor your overall oral health, and address issues before they develop into something more serious. These regular visits will also allow us to make adjustments to your dentures if necessary to ensure that you are not experiencing slippage and/or unnecessary discomfort.

Cost for Full & Partial Dentures

The cost of getting dentures will depend upon what type of dentures you are having placed, any additional procedures that need to be performed, and what insurance coverage from your dental plan can be applied. It is important to be aware that you are fully responsible for all fees of treatment, and payment is due at the time of service, regardless of your insurance coverage. Monthly payment plans can be arranged, but this will need to be accomplished prior to the procedure being performed. Although we will not have a contractual arrangement with your provider, our staff is happy to assist with processing your insurance claim to ensure that you maximize your benefits and receive the high-quality care you need and deserve. For your convenience, we accept Mastercard, Visa, and Discover.
