Permanent Dentures
When is it time to transition to fully permanent dentures? If the majority of your teeth are in decline and you are having to restrict your diet, or if the prosthetics you have are ill-fitting and loose, it may be time to consider permanent denture options. Dentures are usually recommended based on the dentition, or arrangement of your teeth, and a combination of your gum and jaw strength. If you already use snap-on or removable dentures, this will be a relatively easy transition. If your teeth are already in a state of decay or infection where most of them are non-functioning, this may be a slightly longer, but very relieving process.
The Process of Dentures
If you and your Dentist decide that dentures are the best option for you, there is usually a process of removal, healing, fitting, and setting. Firstly your Dentist will consult with an implant team, which will review the details of your mouth and gums. Once they decide to move forward, your Dentist or Dental surgeon will probably remove the remaining teeth on the row or rows you will need dentures. Depending on the health of your mouth and what kind of dental implants you are preparing for, implant anchors may also be placed during this time. After this period the gums can be raw and sore, and it will take some time for them to adjust and heal. This healing process can take several weeks to several months, and will depend on the health of each patient. Dental professionals suggest that eating right and staying hydrated can assist the healing process, also avoid alcohol and smoking. After your gums are healed someone on your Dental Implant team will review your mouth and begin the process of fitting you for your dentures. Once they are ready for adhesion and placement into your mouth there will be some adjustment time, as you learn to care for and use them, while your mouth and jaw are adjusting to the fit. The process while the implants fuse to your bones is called Osseointegration, and it is very neat. It is the same science behind limb implants, aiming to minimize functionality and fit issues.
Full Permanent Dentures
Having complete rows of permanent dentures provides huge bonuses to your Dental Implant.
- Fit- You do not need to worry about the dentures “falling out” which is not as common in modern technology. Moreover you do not need to worry about your dentures moving back and forth in your mouth while you chew, because they are anchored in your jaw. You never have to worry that you have misplaced them,
- Speech- Because of the fit security, permanent denture wearers feel more comfortable with all aspects of mouth movement during speech. You can laugh, cry, and shout to your full potential.
- Eat-You can depend on your permanent dentures to stick it out through the gummiest, crunchiest, and most satisfying foods you love. They’re not going to get stuck in an Apple.
- Bite-A huge benefit of having a full row of permanent dentures is the distribution of biting and chewing force across the jaw. Thanks to good work by your Dental Team, osseointegration, and the natural ergonomics of your mouth, you have your mouth back. You should not experience an issues with Temporomandibular irritation or jaw pain, because the surface area you use to chew and bite is evenly distributed.
- Hygiene- You do not need to remove them from your mouth, which simplifies your Dental hygiene routine a little bit. You simply have to follow the instructions laid out by your Dental Hygienist, which will be very similar to the usual standards of Dental Hygiene. You still need to brush, floss, rinse, the same as any other teeth.
- Appearance-You can consult and provide input in the process. You can ask about which materials are used in the prosthetic and how it will look. Permanent dentures support the features of your face, because they are anchored in your jaw. Unlike temporary or immediate dentures, these will look like your teeth, but more durable and very healthy.
- Amount of Implants- Because of the nature of denture implants and mouth ergonomics, typically only 4 anchors are needed. They are placed in select spots as decided by your Dental team. This is much more convenient then an implant for every tooth, or an implant for every bridge.
- Customization- These are tailored to your mouth for best fit and comfort. A huge plus over traditional dentures or temporary dentures. These are your ne teeth in your new mouth. They are customized to your specifications.
- No Adhesive Chemicals- The two most common complaints about dentures are pain caused by poor fitting or infection, and reactions to the adhesive compounds. A huge benefit of anchored permanent dentures is the lack of adhesive chemicals. Your prosthetic is comprised of biocompatible materials and is anchored into your actual jaw and gums for optimal fit. No additional pastes required.
Special Considerations
If you do encounter problems or infections, your Dental implants can be removed, but it will require a Dentist visit. They can also be adjusted. You will have to maintain regular visits and open communication with your Dentist and Dental hygienist regarding care and maintenance of your mouth and prosthetics. You are given a big responsibility caring for your teeth, and you need to be accountable for the maintenance of them. Ask questions and be involved in the process. Request more information on Dental Hygiene technologies, like water picks, water flossers, electric toothbrushes, mouth washes, toothpaste, etc. There may be more cost upfront, depending on your insurance provider coverage. It is important to know permanent Dentures are an option, and consider the upfront cost vs. the cost over time aspect of routine care for your prosthetics. Consult with your Dentist or Dental implant team about their suggestions and all the options available, then make a list, and compare with your insurance provider. Everybody should be working together to give you back that smile and comfort you have been missing. If they are not there to see you smile again, it may be time for someone new. There are lots of excellent dental professionals out there, and new technology developing every day.
